A Brief Background on Fish Art

Fish art, in general, has been the subject of works of art for at least 14,000 years and has appeared in primitive art with many cultures around the globe. Ancient civilizations showed these as constant motifs and with the development of print and painting the depiction of fish became more widespread with still lifes appearing in the renaissance which depicted more realistic impressions. As such, with gyotaku, i.e. fish prints, being developed in the 1850s in Japan, direct reliefs of the details of a fish would be transferred to paper for incredibly life-like renditions. Although gyotaku is a black and white direct imprint of a fish, fish painting is a more colorful and imaginative rendition that can have more background and color beyond the subject of the fish. You may be able to create an environment of the fish in the water and its habitat with water and plants to add more to the composition inside the frame.
